The Ishpeming Hematites had a tough game ahead of them against the Norway Knights due to the fact that the Hematites were missing multiple key players. The scoring started off quickly, and both teams were able to score on their first possessions. Khora Swanson drained a long three-pointer which gave Ishpeming the lead by a score of 5-2. Hannah Smith did a great job on defense in the first quarter, and she had a particularly excellent play when she blocked out a Knights player and forced a turnover. Khora Swanson again put down a long three pointer, and with under two minutes left in the quarter, the score was 11-5 in favor of the Hematites. As the buzzer rang, the score at the end of the first was 11-7, with the Hematites still in control of the game.
The Ishpeming Hematites had the in-bounds pass to start the second quarter, and on their very first drive of the quarter, Ishpeming added two quick points to their score. Ishpeming kept up their great play throughout the first part of the second quarter, but the Norway Knights slowly but surely began to close the gap. Eventually, the Knights began to overpower the Ishpeming players, and with just over a minute left in the quarter, the Hematites trailed by almost ten points. Khora Swanson made her third three-pointer of the game late in the quarter, and it brought Ishpeming to within six points of Norway.
First Half Score:
Ishpeming Hematites: 21
Norway Knights: 27
It was a wild first half, with both teams taking the lead throughout the first half. The Ishpeming Hematites looked great in the first quarter, but had some troubles in the second. Maddigan Johns made several free-throws which allowed Ishpeming to stay within contact of the Knights. A bit later in the quarter, the Hematites began to slow down the game with some intentional fouls, and that allowed Ishpeming to stay in the game. Even though the Hematites had some great plays, by the end of the quarter, the Knights had gone on a 15-point scoring run. When the buzzer sounded the end of the third quarter, Norway led 30-49.
As the final quarter dawned, the Ishpeming Hematites trailed the Norway Knights by 19 points, and it was going to be a very long road if they were going to make a comeback. The Hematites scored the first points of the quarter, but the Knights answered immediately. Norway’s full-court press was a little too much for the Hematites to handle, but they were able to decrease the Knights’ lead to 16 points with three minutes left in the game. With just under a minute left in the game, Norway’s lead had increased to 20 points.
