Hematite Friday Night – Ishpeming Hematites (20) VS St. Ignace Saints (14) on 98.3 WRUP 10/16/2015
St. Ignace, Michigan – October 16th, 2015 – Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were in St. Ignace, MI for this Hematite Friday Night for the Ishpeming Hematities game against the St. Ignace Saints on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com. It was the seventh game of the season, and the Hematites looked to continue their winning ways after defeating the Negaunee Miners the previous week. Mike and Bob brought you their stats and predictions during the Honor Credit Union pregame show!
The Ishpeming Hematites won the opening coin toss, and as usual, they differed receiving the ball until the second half kick off. The St. Ignace Saints took the opening kick off and made a strong drive down the field on the return, but they were quickly stopped by the Hematites. The Ishpeming Hematites’ Daren Giuchin forced a fumble on the Saints second play of the drive, and they were able to recover with excellent field position on the St. Ignace 40 yard line. Ishpeming was able to score a touchdown on a nice run, and after the two point conversion was completed, the score was 8-0. On the Saints next drive, a fumbled pass led to an interception by Ozzy Corp, which gave the Hematites another excellent chance to put more points on the board. A series of penalties during the Hematites’ drive, however, forced them into a 3rd and 18 yard situation, but Nick Comment caught a huge pass for 49 yards and the first down with just four minutes left in the first quarter. The Hematites were unable to score on the tough St. Ignace Saints defense after being forced to punt. The quarter ended without any further scoring.
The St. Ignace Saints held control of the football going into the second quarter, but the Ishpeming Hematites looked to hold strong on defense and stop the Saints’ drive. On the second play of the quarter, Nick Comment intercepted a pass from St. Ignace to give the Hematites control of the ball. Ishpeming was stopped by the Saints however, as they were forced to punt the ball to avoid giving St. Ignace excellent field position. With just under seven minutes left in the first half, St. Ignace scored a touchdown on a quarterback sneak play, and after the missed two point conversion, the score was 8-6 in favor of Ishpeming. The Hematites continued to struggle with penalties, amassing seven penalties for a total of -55 yards in less than two quarters. With just over one minute left in the half, the Hematites were forced to punt the ball again, giving control of the ball to the Saints, but the Saints were unable to score before the half ended, only on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com!
The second half of play opened with the Ishpeming Hematites receiving the ball on the kick off. The Hematites started at their own 26 yard line, and on the second play of the drive, the Hematites completed a 50 yard pass play. Nick Comment scored a touchdown thanks to that huge pass play, and after the two point conversion failed, the score was 14-6. The Hematites continued to have problems with penalties in the second half of play, and the St. Ignace Saints looked to capitalize on their mistakes. Halen Carello scored a touchdown on a nice run play after a strong goal-line stand by the St. Ignace Saints. After the two point conversion was no good, the score was 20-6 with just over one minute left in the quarter.
The Ishpeming Hematites started the final quarter of play with a narrow lead, and Coach Olsen encouraged his players to stay strong on defense. The St. Ignace Saints opened the fourth quarter in possession of the ball, and they were able to score a touchdown to make the score 20-14, still in favor of Ishpeming. Matt Maki had a great run for the Ishpeming Hematites, to give them excellent field position after the Saints’ touchdown, but St. Ignace was able to force a fumble from the Hematites soon thereafter, which gave the Saints control of the ball with just over 10 minutes left to play. Issac Olsen had a great defensive play when he was able to sack the quarterback and force a punt from St. Ignace. With the end of the game closing in, the Ishpeming Hematites looked to stand strong on defense, and they were able to hold back the Saints’ offense on multiple drives, and the game ended without and further scoring.
