Ishpeming Hematites (36) Boys Basketball at Negaunee Miners (53)
Negaunee, MI – February 13th, 2015 – The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team took on the Negaunee Miners in Negaunee tonight. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you the action live on 98.3 WRUP!
The Hematites lost the tipoff, but scored the first basket of the game when Travis Fredy cleaned up a missed shot and put the ball back in. Negaunee’s Tassin hit a 3-pointer on the next possession. A 3-pointer from Luke Kuliu gave the Hematites an early 5-4 lead. The Hematites gave up a few too many 3-pointers in the first, and the Hematites were down 9-15 going into the second quarter.

The Hematites turned the ball over on the first possession of the second quarter, and Negaunee’s Dre Tuominen scored on the other end. Thomas Finegan hit a jumper for the Hematites to make it 11-17. Travis Fredy grabbed an offensive rebound, quickly passing to Ozzy Corp, who found Kuliu under the basket to score and make the game 13-19 halfway through the quarter. With 2 minutes left in the quarter, Corp called for an isolation, and drove to the basket, scoring to make it 15-21. Kyle Torres hit a jumper with a minute left in the half, followed by a Negaunee basket to make it 17-25. A free throw from Negaunee gave the Hematites a 17-26 deficit going into halftime.

Ozzy Hakkarinen scored on the first Hematites possession in the third, and he had the first 6 points of the quarter for the Hematites. With 55 seconds left in the quarter Ozzy Corp hit a free throw to cut the Miners lead to 24-32 going into the final quarter.

A free throw from Hakkarinen was follwed by two straight jumpers by Thomas Finegan to make it 29-39 with 5 minutes left in the game. Ozzy Corp made it to the free throw line with 4 minutes left and made two free throws to make it 31-44. Negaunee then answered with another 3-pointer, and the Hematites could not get the stops to catch back up. Ishpeming lost the game, 36-53.

The Hematites were lead in scoring by Thomas Finegan, who had 12 points in the loss. Ozzy Hakkarinen and Luke Kuliu each had 7 points, and Ozzy Corp had 6 points and 6 rebounds for Ishpeming. The Hematites shot 14/39 from the field, and had 19 rebounds in the loss. Dre Tuominen was the leading scorer for Negaunee with 19 points.
Ishpeming won the JV game 53-46, and they won the Freshman game 30-21.
