What this guy found in Guyana will ruin your day…

Welcome to the Halloween 2014 series from Great Lakes Radio

Guyana October 28, 2014Go ahead and burn every Halloween costume you’ve ever worn because this is scarier than anything you’ll ever find in a costume shop. Imagine a cute little puppy that you can pick up and hold in your arms. Now, imagine a spider bigger than that puppy.

If you survived that picture without closing out your browser and/or throwing your computer into the fireplace, you’re braver than a lot of people. You’re almost as brave as Piotr Naskrecki, an entomologist and photographer who came across the world’s largest spider in the rainforest of Guyana during a nighttime stroll. Let’s applaud the fact that Piotr not only fought the urge to run as far away from the enormous spider as possible, but he even had the courage to take photos with it. Now, we can all experience the terror he must have felt when shining his flashlight on this:

In case you’re curious, this puppy-sized spider is known as the South American Goliath birdeater. (A name as scary as the spider itself) According to Guinness World Records, it is the largest known spider, with a leg span up to a foot, or about the size of “a child’s forearm”, if you also want that terrifying visual.

Let’s thank Piotr Naskrecki for giving us more fuel for nightmares. If puppy-sized spiders don’t make you want to pull your own eye balls out, here’s a scary costume for your four-legged friend:
