Ishpeming Hematite Boys Basketball – Ishpeming Hematites (43) VS Negaunee Miners (52) on 98.3 WRUP 2/7/14

2/7/14 Ishpeming, Michigan – “Respect the Rock, Hematite Friday Night!!!”  Tonight the Hematite Boys took on their rival team the Negaunee Miners in their own stomping ground for this important Mid-Peninsula Conference Game.  The heat was on and the intensity was high.  How would this neighboring town rivalry end?  Could you think of a better way to spend a Friday night then with Hematite intense excitement and game suspense.  This is the second time this season that the Hematites met the Miners, so each team knew what to expect from each other and Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were there in Ishpeming to bring you all the action LIVE on 98.3 WRUP.

The game started with Negaunee winning the jump ball and not wasting anytime by putting points on the board almost immediately (2-0, Miners).  The Miners quickly posted another “long” two pointer down the middle increasing their lead 4-2.  The Hematites followed up with a nice lay up of their own giving them a spot on the board for two.  The Miners got a chance at the free throw line and sunk one in making the score 5-2, with them keeping their lead.  Ishpeming got a chance at the free throw line as well after a foul and was able to make one in.  Negaunee made a nice three pointer from the point increasing their lead by five (8-3, Miners).  Then the Hematites answered back with a nice three pointer  “right down Division street”.  Then Ishpeming was able to put a nice shot “up and in” from the right side tying the score 8-8.  The Hematites continued to play with swift intensity as they battled with the Miners to control the board.  Ishpeming was able to take the lead making the score 10-8 with a nice jump shot.  The Miners continued to throw up screens against the Hematites, but the Hematites kept up the pace with quick passing.  The Miners retaliated back however and posted a bucket which tied the score again at 10-10.  The Hematites were able to post another “excellent” three pointer to take back the lead.  As the first quarter winded down both teams battled back and forth with  fast pace and high intensity.  The quarter ended with a score of 16-13, Hematites lead after a Miner three pointer and three free throws sunk by the Hematites.

The second quarter started with the Hematites having possession of the ball.  Both teams continued to battle back and forth utilizing great passing and attempting to sink various shots.  The intensity was high and the suspense was thick, both teams were out to play hard and to win.  Negaunee was able to post one in but the Hematites answered back with a bucket of their own (18-15, Hematites).  Ishpeming had a “great” block against a Miner shot and was able to retain the ball, but could not score.  The high pace and intense battle continued as the score became 18-17 after another Miner bucket.  Then Negaunee was able to take back the lead by one point after another quick basket, (19-18, Miners).  The Miners sunk another bucket increasing their lead by three making the score 21-18.  The clock seemed to run fast throughout the quarter.  More shots were attempted but unable to be scored.  Ishpeming got to return to the free throw line and was able to make both shots shortening the Miner lead to one point.  However, Negaunee posted a “long, 19 foot” three point basket making the lead 24-20, Miners ahead.  More baskets were made.  Ishpeming made a”big” three pointer with one minute left of the half bringing the score 26-23, with the Miners maintaining their lead.  The EXCITING half ended with a Miner three pointer at the buzzer making the score 29-23, the Miners still in the lead.

The third quarter continued to be just as intense and fast paced.  The Hematites had possession of the ball to start and was able to put a nice shot “up and in” and was fouled as well.  Ishpeming got a chance at the free throw line after the foul and sunk a shot changing the score to 29-26 with Miners in the lead.  However the Miners gained two more points after scoring a bucket of their own and making a free throw off of a foul (32-26, Miners).  Both teams continued to battle back and forth by making baskets and utilizing quick feet and quick passing.  The score was soon 34-28, Miners continuing to lead.  The clock continued to seem to run down very fast.  Both team’s coaches were telling their players to slow down the pace, take their time and run some plays.  Ishpeming had an nail biter moment as various shots were attempted one right after another but could not be made.  The Hematites were able to return to the free throw line and was able to make both free throws and then fired off another bucket shortly after (34-32, Miners).  The excitement continued to be intense and the suspense continued to be thick.  The Hematites had an “awesome” pass block and picked up the pace and suspense by attempting to post various shots.  The Hematites were able to take back the lead after a “great” three point basket (35-34, Hematites).  The Miners answered back to the Hematites with a three point bucket of their own and took back the lead at 37-35.  The Hematites got another chance at the free throw line and was able to make one in,  closing the lead to just one point. The quarter ended with a score of 37-36, Miners in the lead.

The fourth quarter started with the same fast pace and intensity as the quarters previous have been played.  Both teams continued to play intently with the main goal to win this Conference game.  Both teams were throwing up the ball with the hopes of scoring another basket to take and keep the lead.  The Miners returned to the free throw line and was able to make one shot (38-36, Miners).  However, the Hematites returned to their free throw line shortly after for a 1:1 attempt and was able to make one throw.  Then Ishpeming took back the lead by sinking a nice bucket, but then the Miners answered back with a basket of their own regaining the lead back.  As the game continued to approach the end, the crowd was on the edge of their seats.  The score was 40-39 with the Miners back in the lead as the quarter continued to run down.  The Miners were able to post another three pointer increasing their lead to 43-39.  The Hematites could feel that the pressure was on.  Negaunee answered to that “pressure” feeling by posting another basket increasing their lead to 45-39.  Ishpeming got a chance to return to the free throw line again and was able to sink one in.  The Miners slowed down their pace with the hopes to run down the clock.  The Hematites were not going to have that for very long and applied their intensity at full force.  Both teams continued to play with quick passing and various shot attempts. The suspense continued to be thick as the Miners blocked a Hematite shot.  The excitement and intensity remained high.  The Hematites got a chance at the free throw line again and was able to make one free throw.  The score was 47-41 with the Miners still in the lead.  More shots were attempted and more baskets were made between both teams as the game winded down.  The intense, high excitement and suspenseful close matched Conference Game ended with a final score of 52-43, Miners winning.  NICE TRY HEMATITES, IT WAS A GREAT GAME!!!
