Ishpeming Hematite Girls Basketball -Ishpeming Hematites (62) VS Manistique Emeralds (50) on 98.3 WRUP 2/18/14

2/18/14 – Ishpeming Michigan – With what seems like the first nice day in a long time, WARM and NO FALLING SNOW Hematite girls basketball excitement seemed like a perfect way to end this fantastic day.  Tonight the Hematite girls took on the Manistique Emeralds at home in Hematite territory.  With basketball season seeming to quickly approach the end, you got to savor every moment of Hematite action.  Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were there in Ishpeming and brought you all the excitement LIVE on 98.3 WRUP.

This was the last home game for the Hematite girls this season and they were out for a win.  The action started off with Ishpeming winning the jump ball.  Both teams started off with a very competitive spirit.  They utilized great passing and team work as they moved the ball up and down the court to begin the first quarter, each team was trying to be the first to put points up on the board.  The Emeralds were able to make a “long two” point shot from down the middle but the Hematites answered back with a three pointer “from right down Division street” to take the lead (3-2, Hematites).  Manistique had a chance at the free throw line and was able to make both shots taking back the lead at 4-3.  However, Ishpeming had their turn at the free throw line and was able to tie the score at 4-4.  Both teams were competitively trying to take and maintain the lead as they locked in to a great offense/defense battle.  The Emeralds made a nice three pointer breaking the tie and taking the lead at 7-4.  Ishpeming got to return to the free throw line again and was able to make both shots closing the Emerald lead to one point at 7-6.  The Hematites put on the full court pressure defense against the Emeralds and gained possession of the ball and was able to put another one “up and in” taking back the lead at 8-7.  Mansitque was stubborn and was not about to back down against the Hematites.  Ishpeming answered back to that stubbornness by utilizing a “great” pass and was able to make another basket “up and in”.  The Hematites returned to the free throw line again after a foul and was able to make one shot (11-7, Hematites).  The quarter ended with a final score of 11-9 Hematite lead after a competitive tough first quarter.

The second quarter started with Manistique getting possession of the ball. The Emeralds posted a nice three pointer “off the square and down” making the score 12-11, with Manistique taking back the lead.  Both teams continued to be locked in a battle to take/control the lead.  The Hematites were able to take back the lead after another “great” bucket making the score 13-12.  The competitiveness was high as well as the determination from both opponents.  Both teams were able to post some nice buckets as the battle continued and the score became 19-16 with the the Hematites in the lead.  The Emeralds answered to that lead by putting another shot in the basket, but the Hematites stood tough and came back with a basket of their own (21-18, Hematites).  The score became 21-20 after Manistique was able to sink another one, the Hematites were determinedly guarding their lead.  The Emeralds were focused and took back the lead after another basket making the score 22-21.  The game was a one point, one basket game.  Ishpeming got a chance at the free throw line but could not make either shot.  The Emeralds sunk another bucket and increased the lead by three, however the Hematites returned to the free throw line and was able to make both dropping the Emerald lead to a point at 24-23.  The quarter wound down as both teams continued to be locked in battle for the lead.  The half ended with a score of  26-23, Manistique holding on to the lead after another Emerald basket.

The determination and competitiveness continued into the third quarter with both teams were still locked in a tough battle.  Manistique got to have possession of the ball to start the battle.  The Emeralds made a three point attempt but was unable to sink it in giving the ball back to Ishpeming. The Hematites scored back to back to back baskets as they turned up their competitive spirit even more and took back the lead at 29-26.  The Hematites then stole the ball from the Emeralds but could not make a shot in, but got to go to the free throw line and was able to sink one in.  Ishpeming continued with the high energy and fired up spirit and sunk two more buckets (34-26, Hematites).  The Hematite lead quickly increased by four more points with a score of 38-26 after they posted two more “nice” shots.  The Hematites stole the ball from the Emeralds again and ended up going to the free throw line after a foul.  Ishpeming was able to make both free throws increasing their by two more points.  Ishpeming continued to play tough with that competitive fired up spirit.  Manistique got a chance at the free throw line and was able to make both shots making the score 40-28, Hematites in the lead.  The Emeralds were not going to give up as they blocked multiple Hematite shots and was able to toss one into the basket.  However, the Hematites still fired up answered back with another bucket to increase their lead.  Then Ishpeming got to return back to the free throw line and was able to make both shots (44-30, Hematites).  The Hematites returned to the free throw line yet again and was able to make one more shot.  The Hematites did not back down with their defense as it stayed as strong and as tough as their offense.  The score became 47-30 with the Hematites keeping their lead after another “nice jump” shot from Ishpeming.  The Hematites continued to control the ball throughout the quarter as they kept up with their high energy and fired up spirit.  The quarter ended with the Hematites in the lead with a score of 47-34.

The fourth quarter started with the ball moving up and down the court but ultimately the Hematites sunk another one in.  That did not stop Manistique as they returned with a bucket of their own (49-36, Hematites).  Both teams continued to battle back and forth with tough competitiveness.  The Hematites remained fired up as they utilized great team work.  Ishpeming got to go to the free throw line and was able to make both shots (51-36, Hematites).  The Hematites quickly returned back to the free throw line again for a 1:1 attempt and was able to make both throws increasing their score by two more.  The Hematites shortly regained possession of the ball and tossed another one “up and in”.  Manistique was able to post a nice shot and then went to the free throw line but could not make the free throw.  The Hematites returned back to the free throw line as well and was able to make both throws bringing up the score to 57-38, Hematite lead.  The clock began to run down the fourth quarter as the Hematites continued with their fired up spirit.  The Hematites increased their lead to 21 points after another nice “up and in” shot, but the Emeralds answered back with a “jump” bucket of their own.  The score became 60-40 with the Hematites maintaining their lead.  The score was changed up to 62-44 as both teams were able to make some free throws and post some buckets.  The Emeralds sunk two nice three pointers increasing their points to 50.  The game ended with a final score of 62-50, HEMATITES WIN!!!  NICE JOB GIRLS!!!
