The Ishpeming Hematites Girls Basketball (63) VS the Norway Nights (41) on Marquette’s Home for Classic Rock
1/2/14 Ishpeming MI – With Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau observing the action, the Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team battled the Norway Nights! After a tight game for the Ishpeming JV team (which ended in overtime with Ishpeming leading 30-25), the varsity team beat the Nights 63-41!
The Hematites put their name on the board first with a lay up from the right side. As Ishpeming attempted a second shot a flag was thrown and the Hematites stepped up to the line. However, neither of the shots were good. A slew of shots were attempted throughout the next minute but the 2-0 score wasn’t changed. The Nights scored next. Even after Norway picked up their next point at the free throw line, the Hematites led 4-3. Seconds later, the Hematites sunk two free throws. Not to be underestimated, Norway used a full court press to take the lead (7-5). The lead was tossed back and forth before, racing the ball across the court, Ishpeming sunk a three pointer bringing the score to 10-7 (Ishpeming). Again, Norway took a narrow lead. Tossing the ball back and forth resulted in a three point basket for Ishpeming (15-13) and with 20 seconds left in the first quarter, Ishpeming stole the last basket of the quarter bringing the score to 17-13 (Ishpeming).
Kicking off the second quarter, the Hematites were fouled but couldn’t sink the free throws. The score stalled at 17-13 (Hematites) for several minutes. Breaking this spell, the Nights sunk a basket shortly followed by two shots by Ishpeming (21-15). After the game got a little rough, Ishpeming scored both their free throws before employing a full court pressure (23-15). After two consecutive shots by the Nights, the scoreboard read 29-18 (Hematites). Norway substituted players freely throughout the first half. The Hematites stole the ball and made a run for the basket – sinking it and ending the quarter 32-20 (Ishpeming)!
A jump shot started the third quarter bringing Ishpeming just a little bit farther ahead (34-20). Again, Norway used a full court pressure, but it didn’t stop Ishpeming from sinking yet another basket (40-21 Ishpeming). A picture perfect three pointer by the Nights brought the score to 40-26 (Hematites). On their next set of free throws, the Nights were only able to cash in on their first shot. This free throw was quickly followed by another foul and a successful shot from just inside the line. The score was 47-31 (Ishpeming) until the Hematites shot again. The Nights were still enforcing a full court pressure but the Hematites shot, pulling off a two pointer from the left side (51-32 Hematites). Ending the half with a twenty point game, the Hematites sunk a free throw bringing the score to 52-32 (Hematites).
A foul for Ishpeming started the fourth quarter bringing the game to 54-32 (Ishpeming). Time outs were called as the clock wound down and the teams scored again (56-35 Hematites). Ishpeming’s free throws triggered a full time out by the Nights. With 1:12 left in the game, the players worked harder than ever! A three point basket and a shot off of the glass both resulted in points. In a fight for the ball, Norway won with 32 seconds left on the clock! As the game wound down, free throws brought the score from 61-41 (Ishpeming) to the final score of 63-41 (Ishpeming)!
