Ishpeming Hematites Boys Basketball -Ishpeming Hematites (55) VS Gwinn Modeltowners (51) on 98.3 WRUP 1/22/14
1/22/14 – Gwinn, Michigan – With the chances for more snow in the air, the Hematite Boys braved the “Lake Effect Snow” warnings and traveled to Gwinn tonight to take on the Modeltowners. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were also in Gwinn bringing you all the Hematite action live on 98.3 WRUP. With both teams meeting for the second time this season, energy and the “idea” of fast movement were on the minds and in the hearts of both teams. Each team knew what to expect from the other, would there be any surprises was the question. Determination, focus and team work was key in this even match up game.
The first quarter started with Ishpeming receiving the ball after the jump. Gwinn made the first basket to put points on the board but Ishpeming returned with a bucket of their own to tie the score at 2-2. Ishpeming played with a fast pace and passed the ball with high energy. The Modeltowners countered with equal energy as each team were determined to put points on the board to take the lead. The Hematites utilized their man to man defense tactic. The score became 5-4 Ishpeming leading after a nice three point bucket. Both teams continued to play with a tight defense and a fast offense. The Hematites were able to post another three point basket making the score 8-6 while keeping the lead. Gwinn quickly counteracted with a reverse lay up and tied the score at 8-8. The Hematites scored another “big” three pointer from the top of the point increasing their lead to 11-8. The Modeltowners got a chance at the free throw line after a foul and was able to sink one shot changing the score to 11-9, Hematite lead. The quarter ended with a score of 11-9 and each team continuing with their fast pace, team work and determination.
The second quarter started with the Modeltowners having possession of the ball. Ishpeming made a “sweet” first bucket of the quarter increasing their lead to 13-9. Both teams continued to utilize quick passing and had various shot attempts. The Hematites were able to retain the ball, bring it down court and scored off a nice lay up (15-9, Hematites). The Hematites were then able to take back the ball after the Modeltowners attempted a reverse lay up but were unable to sink it in. Ishpeming utilized their tough defense and made some great blocks against the Gwinn shot attempts. Both teams continued to be focused as the clock continued to run down the half. The Modeltowners were able to post another basket closing the lead to 15-11, Hematites. There was a “double foul” with both teams fouling each other, but Ishpeming was able to keep procession of the ball and sink another basket (17-11, Hematites). Both teams continued with high energy as the half approached the end. The Modeltowners got to go to the free throw line twice and were able to make a four shots closing the lead to 17-15, Hematites. Gwinn was then able to score another bucket tying the score at 17-17 as the clock continued to run down. The half ended with a score of 19-17, Hematite lead after a shot at the buzzer was sunk by Ishpeming.
The second half began with Ishpeming having the initial ball possession. The Hematites made a great bucket after some excellent team work passing. Then Ishpeming was able to score another basket after continuing with their excellent passing. The score became 23-17, Hematites after both of those Hematite baskets. The Modeltowners also utilized great team work passing and was able to sink a bucket of their own. Both teams continued to post “sweet” shots including a Hematite three pointer making the score 28-21, with Ishpeming maintaining their lead. The Hematites shortly increased their lead by ten after another “big” three point bucket, the score 31-21, Hematite lead. The energy remained to be high as each team took turns offending and defending, making screens and attempting shots. The Hematites did get a chance at the free throw line and was able to make both shots and a basket (35-23, Hematites). The pace was still fast, and each team worked hard to keep possession of the ball. Gwinn was able to close the lead to a ten point difference after another bucket was made making the score 35-25, Hematites in the lead. However, Ishpeming retaliated with a “sweet” hook shot increasing their lead again by twelve points. The quarter ended high energy like with a score of 37-27, Hematites lead.
The fourth quarter continued with high energy and intense team work coming from both teams. Both Gwinn and Ishpeming made various shot attempts but were unable to sink one in. Gwinn did post a “great” shot but Ishpeming made a “long” two pointer to maintain their ten point lead at 39-29. The Modeltowners were able to make another quick bucket shortly after (39-31, Hematites). The Hematites got a chance at the free throw line and was able to make both free throws increasing the score to 41-31, Hematites. Ishpeming dribbled the ball and kept their momentum going, forcing Gwinn to keep their momentum steady as well. The Modeltowners utilized that momentum and made a nice three point basket changing the score to 41-34, Hematite lead. Gwinn continued with quick passes and making some great shots as the score was changed up to 41-40, Hematite lead. As the game came close to the end suspense was added in with the high energy as the difference in the score was only by one point. The Hematites got a chance at the free throw line and were able to make both shots increasing their lead to 43-40 with just about thirty seconds left of the game. The Modeltowners got to return to the free throw line for a 1:1 attempt and was able to make both shots closing the lead to just one point again (43-41, Hematites). Shortly after that Ishpeming got to return to the free throw line for a 1:1 attempt of their own, making the score 45-42 after making both shots. The Modeltowners posted a quick three pointer tying the score at 45-45, with just seconds left and sent the game into overtime.
The ball was jumped again to start the over time which is equal to half a quarter. Gwinn quickly retained the ball and brought it down court for a lay-up putting them ahead by two points. The Hematites then returned to the free throw line and was able to make both shots tying the score again at 47-47. The suspense was thick and the energy remained high with both teams. The Hematites posted a three pointer “from downtown” and took the lead at 50-47. The Modeltowners however returned to the free throw line and was able to make one throw. Both teams passed the ball intently with the hopes to make some baskets, take the lead and win the game. Ishpeming kept possession of the ball by dribbling and passing with the hopes to bring down the clock. During that offensive tactic, the Hematites returned to the free throw line and made both shots (53-48, Hematites). Ishpeming got yet another chance at the free throw line with a double bonus shortly after and was able to make one in. The table turned as Gwinn got a chance at their free throw line and was able to make both shots making the score 53-50, Hematites keeping their lead. The Modeltowners got to return to the line and were able to make one throw but Ishpeming brought the ball quickly down court and made an excellent lay up. The Hematites won with a final score of 55-51, GREAT JOB HEMATITES!!!
