12/19/13 Ishpeming Michigan – Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were live on 98.3 WRUP as the Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team battled the Escanaba Eskimos. A strong second half for the Eskimos brought the game into double overtime! With three seconds left in double overtime, a free throw for the Hematites ended the game 61-60 (Hematites).

As the clock started to count down, both teams attempted to take the lead. However, the excellent defense of both teams sent potential baskets out of bounds. The Hematites took the first score with jump shot. Escanaba switched to a two-three zone defense. Then, Escanaba was fouled and stepped up to the line. However, the scoreboard remained unchanged. The Hematites scored another basked (just short of a three pointer) bringing the score to 4-0 (Hematites). With 3:30 left in the first quarter, Ishpeming sunk yet another basket and the Eskimos remained scoreless. Ishpeming missed a shot but was able to turn the rebound into a basket setting the score to 6-0 Hematites. Ishpeming was fouled and stepped up to the line for two more points. Then, the Eskimos made a basket, putting their name on the board (10-2 Ishpeming). After two unsuccessful free throw attempts by Escanaba and a missed shot by Ishpeming, the quarter ended with a score of 10-2 in favor of Ishpeming.

basket from the right side, quickly followed by one more shot. The Eskimos then stepped up to the foul line for free throws. Both shots were good bringing the score to 13-8 (Hematites). Ishpeming scored several more times, and was fouled. Sinking only one of their free throws, Ishpeming still led 18-8. The ensuing scrabble for the rebound caused a foul. Ishpeming sunk only one of its free throws. Another foul with four minutes left in the half, and Ishpeming gained one more point bringing the score to 21-10 (Hematites). Using a full court pressure, the Hematites scored again.  Escanaba was fouled and picked up both it’s free throws bringing the score to 23-12 (Hematites). Escanaba was called for a blocking foul, but no points were gained. With only a minute left in the half, the Eskimos were fouled and stepped up to the line. Sinking both shots, the Eskimos brought the score to 23-14 (Hematites). The Hematites next basket was countered by two successful free throws by the Eskimos. As the half ended, the score was 25-16 (Hematites).

The first minute of the third quarter was filled with shot attempts by both teams but without luck. To break this streak, Ishpeming was fouled and picked up another point at the free throw line. The Hematites now led by 10. Ishpeming scored again, quickly followed by a foul for the Eskimos. Sinking only the first free throw, the Eskimos walked away from their free throws with a score of 27-18 (Hematites). Ishpeming’s next score was countered by an Eskimos basket. After a long two pointer by Ishpeming the Hematites scre again and the scoreboard read 33-20 (Hematites). The Eskimos pick up one more point through a free throw. Both teams are quick to score in the last minutes of the third quarter. After one final free throw by Ishpeming, the score at the end of the third was 36-23 (Hematites).

Gaining two points at the start of the fourth quarter, the Eskimos stepped off of the free throw line 11 points behind the Hematites (36-25). In retaliation, the Hematites scored again. Against Ishpeming’s best defense, the Eskimos made several shots and a free throw bringing the score to 38-30 (Hematites). Although Ishpeming fired off several shots, they only scored one and called a time out with a score of 40-34 (Hematites). Both the Eskimos and the Hematites shot and scored before Escanaba was fouled. However, the Eskimos were unable to make either of their free throws. The score hovered at 42-41 (Hematites). Then, Escanaba sunk a basket and took the lead with two minutes left in the game! Determined to regain their lead, the Hematites sunk a three pointer and gained several points through a foul. After an Eskimos free throw, the scoreboard read 47-44 (Hematites). Ishpeming pulled ahead again (50-44), but a series of three point shots for the Eskimos brought the game to a 50-50 tie as the clock ran out.

The Eskimos short lived lead in overtime (52-51) was overrun by the Hematites. However, after a Escanaba time out, the Eskimos started to catch up again. At the end of overtime, the Eskimos had tied the game yet again (55-55)!
Determined to take the lead, both teams battled through the second overtime. Ishpeming scored then the Eskimos scored. Escanaba had the lead  (61-59) until a quick shot by the Hematites brought the game to a draw with just over a minute left. Then, an injury on the court paused the clock.  With three seconds left on the clock, Ishpeming was fouled and stepped up to the line. Ishpeming sunk one free throw, just enough to win the game! The final score was 62-61 (Hematites)!
